Diary entry from August 29, 1959:
Clear, warm, cloudy in the afternoon, brief thunderstorm rain.
Get up at 7 a.m., at half past eight I have breakfast alone downstairs, then drive the car to the VW workshop, meet Putti [his wife] and K. at breakfast. We leave at 9, buy a hat for putti, a belt for me, walk across Av. Mohammed V to Djemaa el Fna Square, drinking Oulmès [mineral water], looking in vain for the Douane. K. is stung by a wasp. We then take the bus back to Guéliz, where we have 8 films stamped at customs and then send them away. At 12 I get the green back, everything should be fine and the brake pads are still very good. We go to the hotel, eat well and go to sleep. At 3 I wake K., at 4 we hire the hotel's guide, drive via Koutoubia to Bab Agenou, see the Tombeaux Saadiens [Tombs of the Saadites], drive past the Sultan's Palace via the 3 Méchouers [? Illegible], then to the Dar Si Said museum, then to a house that is being converted into a Moorish restaurant.* Then to the Djemaa el Fna, where we first drink Oulmès on the balcony and then walk across the square. From there via the new town back to the hotel, where we pay the guide (800 frs). Drank another beer, then bathed and ate at the hotel. Putti goes up and writes cards. K. and I go to the open-air cinema (James Cagney, L'homme au mille visages). In the hotel at 1:30, in bed at 1:00. The green one is on the street.
*Nearby carpet dealers, but we don't buy anything.
